It also means to get purification through the water bath. Well these both are related. To baptize the new born baby is to purify the child and remove all the ancestral sins. It is also an essential role in baptism. The Catholics think that baptism is necessary for salvation. And this is called the baptism by salvation. But when a baby is baptized then he or she is named. They follow in a different pattern in both the Roman Catholic Church and other ancient Christian churches. They are all conducted in churches. It is on the people to follow in the churches according to them which are carried on hereditarily. Invitations is given to all the near by friends and relatives for the purpose of the baptism of the infant in the church. First the baby is held by the parents and taken near the Father of the church and the Father continues to follow all the rituals that are required for the infant to get purified and after all these are carried out when the father with the consent of the parents names the infant. The friends are invited and they are treated respectfully. At last they continue with their dinner or lunch. The people who are connected with the church they are invited to bless the child and give good wishes for their future. These all things are conducted by the parents of the baby for the betterment of his life in the future.
