About godparents

According Christian community, a godparent is a person who does a child's baptism. A godfather is a male godparent and a godmother is a female godparent, and the child is a godchild. In earlier days, the godparents were taking the responsibility of the child's religious education and also were taking care of children if these godparents were orphan. But modern godparents have their own definition. Parents chose godparents to make their children good human beings and to develop spiritual and religious beliefs. The godparents are only meant for religious purpose but not declared legally as the child's parents. If the godparents want to become foster parents, then it should be legally declared.

History of godparents

According to history, when people converted from one religion to Christian community, they needed somebody to teach them the traditions of Christianity. So, the need for godparents arose from this period. In earlier days, many religions had their own practices and beliefs that were completely different from Christianity. When some of these religion members wanted to convert into Christian, they opted to baptism. They would have to meet the local church priest for their guanine decision. Here the godparents played the role of witnesses in front of the priests. They could be the Christian friends to support their conversion.

Role of godparents in baptism

The parents chose the godparents to the most precious part of their life - their loving child. The main duty is to provide Christian community training to the baptized kids. The godparents dedicate their lives for the spiritual and moral development in a child's life. The godparents may vary from church to church. They also help to develop the new faith in non-Christians who then converted to Christians. The other responsibilities of godparents include regularly praying for the godchild; developing Christian life styles and spiritual beliefs in child; helping the child to develop faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit according to which the child has been baptized; helping the child to follow Christ and to avoid evilness; to move forward in the life with confidence and good Christian and human qualities built in one's life. The godparents make a child's life to be filled with all moral, ethical, and good qualities.
